A plain step-by-step guide to checking a Madras High Court case status online, for the Chennai principal seat and the Madurai Bench, with every search method and what each status word means.

How-To · Case Status · Madras High Court

You have a Madras High Court case number, or only a party name, and you need to know one thing: is it listed, disposed, or reserved for orders? Many people lose time here because the Madras High Court sits at two places, and a search on the wrong bench shows nothing. This guide shows how to check a Madras High Court case status online, which search method to use, and what each status word means.

The short answer
  • Where to check: hcservices.ecourts.gov.in or the official Madras High Court website.
  • Pick the right bench: principal seat at Chennai or the Madurai Bench.
  • Jurisdiction: Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
  • Best search: case number or CNR. Use party name when you have neither.
  • To follow a case: track it in Claw with a free account, with hearing and order alerts.

01Quick answer

To check Madras High Court case status online, open the eCourts High Court Services portal or the official court website, choose the High Court of Madras and the right bench, then search by case number, CNR, party name or advocate name. 02The Madras High Court: benches and jurisdiction

The Madras High Court is the High Court for the State of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Its principal seat is at Chennai. It also has a Bench at Madurai, which hears matters from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

This matters for status checks. A case filed at the principal seat will not appear under the Madurai Bench, and the reverse is also true. If you are not sure where a matter was filed, try both benches before you decide the record is missing.

  • Principal seat, Chennai: the main seat of the court, with the Chief Justice and most of the roster.
  • Madurai Bench: hears matters arising from the districts assigned to it. The two seats keep separate cause lists.
  • Puducherry: matters from the Union Territory come to the Madras High Court, usually at the principal seat.

Case numbers carry a type, such as W.P., Crl.O.P., S.A. or C.M.A., then a number and a year. Writ petitions are the largest group. Check the type exactly as it is written on your order or filing receipt.

03Step by step on the official portal

The same record is available on two official sites. The eCourts High Court Services portal serves many High Courts from one place, and the Madras High Court also runs its own website.

  1. Open the portal. Go to hcservices.ecourts.gov.in or mhc.tn.gov.in.
  2. Select Case Status. On the eCourts portal, choose the High Court of Madras from the list of courts.
  3. Select the bench. Pick the principal seat at Chennai or the Madurai Bench.
  4. Choose how to search. Case number, CNR, party name, advocate name, FIR number or filing number. The next section explains which to use.
  5. Enter the details and the captcha. For a case number, give the type, number and year.
  6. Read the result. Open the case to see the status, the next hearing date, interim orders and the history of hearings.

Search results show public court data. Always confirm the next date again on the day, because a matter can be advanced, adjourned or moved.

04Search methods compared

Use the most exact detail you have. A unique number gives one clean result. A name can give many.

MethodWhat you enterBest whenWatch out for
Case numberCase type, number and yearYou have the filing or order copyWrong case type or year gives no result
CNR numberThe 16 character Case Number RecordYou have the CNR on a receipt or orderEasy to mistype; copy it exactly
Party namePetitioner or respondent name, yearYou do not have the numberSpelling changes and common names give long lists
Advocate nameName of the advocate on recordYou want all matters of one counselName must match how it was filed
FIR numberPolice station, FIR number and yearCriminal matters such as bail or quashingApplies mainly to criminal cases
Filing numberFiling number and yearThe case is filed but has no case number yetNot shown once a number is registered under another label

If you are searching by party name, try the short form of the name and the full form. Court records often hold names with initials, which is why name matching is the weak point of most manual searches.

05What the status words mean

The status field is short but easy to misread. Here is what each common word means in practice.

StatusWhat it meansWhat to do
PendingThe case is registered and not yet decided.Watch the next hearing date.
DisposedThe court has finally decided the case or closed it.Get the final order. Check the time limit for appeal.
ListedThe case is on the cause list for a date.Check the court hall, item number and bench.
For ordersArguments are over or the matter is posted for an order on that day.Check the order upload after the hearing.
ReservedThe judge heard the matter and will pronounce the judgment later.Track for the pronouncement date and the uploaded judgment.

Do not treat disposed as the end of your work. A disposed writ petition can still lead to an appeal, a review or a contempt step, each with its own time limit.

06When you cannot find the case

  • Wrong bench: switch between the principal seat and the Madurai Bench and search again.
  • Wrong case type or year: use the type on the filed copy, not what you remember.
  • Just filed: a new matter may show only under a filing number until it is registered.
  • Name mismatch: try initials, spelling variants and the other party.
  • Portal down or slow: try again later, or use the court website if you used the eCourts portal first.

If you manage many matters at once, the real problem is not one search. It is repeating the search every week. Teams that pull court data into their own systems can look at a litigation search API for banks and NBFCs. For long orders, a court order summariser saves reading time. And when a time limit is the issue, the rules differ by case type, as the example of patent restoration under Section 60 shows.

07Where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

For Madras High Court matters, the official portal is the source of truth, and you should keep using it for anything critical. Claw helps with the part the portal does not do well: following matters over time. Claw covers 9,102 courts, benches and forums, including the Madras High Court, so you can track matters by party name or number and get hearing and order alerts, instead of searching again each week.

Claw also helps when you need to find the law, not the status. It holds more than 30 crore judgments, returns results in under 5 seconds, and has High Court judgments from 1990. See the Madras High Court coverage page for details.

Status search needs an account. Create a FREE Claw account and track Madras High Court matters by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts.
