How to correct or update your PAN card online in 2026: name, date of birth, address, photo, signature and Aadhaar details, what proof each change needs, how reprint differs from correction, and why you must never hold two PANs.

How-To Guide · PAN Card

A small mistake on your PAN card, such as a wrong spelling, a different date of birth, or an old address, can quietly cause big trouble later with banks, your employer and the income tax department. To correct or update a PAN card, you file a PAN change request online on the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL website, upload proof for each field you want changed, pay the fee, and wait for the corrected PAN. This guide explains each step, the proof you need, the difference between a correction and a reprint, and the one-PAN rule.

The short answer
  • How to correct PAN: file the PAN change-request form online on Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL, upload proof, pay the fee.
  • Correction vs reprint: correction fixes wrong data; reprint reissues the same data after loss or damage.
  • Your PAN number does not change when you correct details.
  • One PAN only: surrender any duplicate PAN, as holding two can attract a penalty.
  • Why it matters: wrong PAN details can cause TDS and Form 26AS or AIS mismatches and tax notices.

01Why PAN errors matter

Your PAN is the single number that links your tax records. Every bank, employer and deductor reports your income against it. If the details on the card do not match your other records, the system may fail to link them.

Mismatches break matching

A name spelt differently from your Aadhaar, or a wrong date of birth, can stop your PAN from being linked with Aadhaar. An unlinked PAN can become inoperative, which creates problems with filing returns, refunds and banking.

Old details create delays

After marriage, a name change or a move to a new city, many people never update the PAN. Later, when a refund or a notice is sent to the old address, they miss it.

Too many websites, too many fees

Many private sites offer to correct PAN for a large fee. You do not need them. The official change-request forms are open to everyone, and you can fill them yourself.

A PAN correction is a simple online form. The real work is matching your PAN details exactly to your Aadhaar and your proof documents.

02Before you apply

Spend ten minutes on preparation, because most rejected requests fail on a small mismatch.

  • Keep your PAN and Aadhaar handy. You will enter the PAN, and Aadhaar can be used for e-KYC and e-sign.
  • Decide exactly what to change. Name, date of birth, father’s name, address, mobile number, email, photo or signature. Change only what is wrong.
  • Keep scanned proof ready. Use clear scans of documents that show the correct detail.
  • Use only official sites. The two authorised services are Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL e-Gov) and UTIITSL. Both process the same request.

If you do not have a PAN at all, you need a fresh application instead. See our guide on how to apply for a PAN card online.

03Steps to correct or update your PAN card online

The online process is the same on both portals. Only the screens look different.

  1. Open the official change-request page. On the Protean site this is the "PAN Change Request" form (tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/ChangeRequest.html). UTIITSL has an equivalent page on its PAN portal.
  2. Select the application type. Choose "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card".
  3. Enter your details. Fill in your category (usually Individual), PAN, name, date of birth, email and mobile number, then submit to receive a token number.
  4. Tick the fields you want to change. Mark only the changes you need, such as name, address for communication, or date of birth.
  5. Enter the correct details. Type them exactly as on your proof documents. Check spellings twice.
  6. Choose the submission mode. You can usually complete the request with Aadhaar e-KYC and e-sign, which avoids posting paper. Otherwise you upload scanned documents.
  7. Upload proof. Add one valid document for each changed field (see the table below).
  8. Pay the fee. Pay online by card, net banking or UPI. Keep the acknowledgement number.
  9. Track and receive. Use the acknowledgement number to track status. The corrected e-PAN is sent to your email, and a physical card can be posted to your address.

The fee depends on where the physical card is delivered. It is lower for an Indian address and much higher for an address outside India. Always read the exact fee shown on the payment screen, because it can change and includes GST.

Do not pay twice

If payment fails or you are unsure, check the status with your acknowledgement number before paying again. A second payment creates a duplicate request, not a faster one.

04What proof each field needs

Each change needs a document that shows the new, correct detail. The table below gives the usual proof. The official portal lists the full set of accepted documents.

Field to changeTypical proof acceptedCommon mistake
NameAadhaar, passport, driving licence, marriage certificate or gazette notification (for a legal name change)Spelling differs from Aadhaar
Date of birthBirth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport or AadhaarUsing a document with a different date
AddressAadhaar, bank statement, utility bill or passportOld or unreadable document
Father’s nameIdentity proof showing the father’s name, such as passport or AadhaarUsing initials instead of full name
Photo and signatureFresh photograph and a clear signature as asked on the formBlurry scan or signature outside the box
Mobile and emailEntered on the form and confirmed with an OTPNumber not in use
Aadhaar detailsAadhaar number entered on the form, with consentTyping the number wrongly

For a name or date of birth change, make sure your Aadhaar also shows the same details. If Aadhaar and PAN differ, linking them will fail. In that case, fix the wrong record first.

05Correction vs reprint: which one do you need?

A correction changes the data held against your PAN. A reprint only prints the same data again. Choose by asking one question: is anything on the card wrong?

  • Correction or update: use it when a detail is wrong, outdated or missing. The record changes, and a new card or e-PAN is issued with the new details. Your PAN number stays the same.
  • Reprint or duplicate PAN: use it when you have lost the card, or it is damaged, and the details are right. You get the same PAN and the same data on a new card. You do not need to apply for a new number.

On the official portal, reprint and correction share one form, so a reprint request simply means you tick no field to change. Many people wrongly apply for a fresh PAN after losing a card. That is the mistake that leads to a second PAN, which is explained next.

You can also download your e-PAN online if you only need a copy to show a bank or employer. That is faster than waiting for a physical card.

06The one-PAN rule: never hold two PANs

Every person is allowed only one PAN. Holding more than one is against the law, even if it happened by mistake.

Two PANs usually appear when someone applies again after losing the card, after a name change, or after moving states. The tax records then split across two numbers, and the system cannot match your income properly.

The penalty

Under the Income-tax Act, a person who holds or uses more than one PAN can be penalised. The penalty under section 272B has been Rs 10,000 per default, and under the new Income-tax Act 2025 the same idea is carried forward. Check the current section and amount on the official income tax site.

If you already have two PANs

Do not use both. Decide which PAN you want to keep, usually the older one linked to your returns and bank accounts. Then apply to surrender the extra PAN, using the PAN change-request form or the surrender option on the income tax e-filing portal, and return the extra card if you hold it. Do this before the department finds it.

07When a PAN error becomes a tax notice

A PAN error is not only a paperwork problem. It can turn into a tax dispute.

  • TDS mismatches. If your employer, bank or tenant files TDS under a wrong or inoperative PAN, the tax may not show against your name. Your Form 26AS and AIS will then not match your return. See our explainer on Form 16 and TDS to learn how this is checked.
  • Higher TDS. Where a PAN is missing or not valid, TDS may be deducted at a higher rate.
  • Notices. A mismatch between your return and the data in Form 26AS or AIS can lead to an intimation or notice from the income tax department.

First, always fix the PAN record and tell your deductors the correct PAN. If a notice still arrives and you disagree with the order, you can file an appeal before the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), and later the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). Each appeal has its own time limit, so act quickly.

Professionals who handle many such matters use tools to track hearings and deadlines. See litigation tracking for chartered accountants and the guide to tax litigation management software.

08Where Claw fits

Correcting a PAN is a government service, and Claw does not do it for you. You will use the Protean or UTIITSL portal.

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

Claw becomes useful only if a PAN mismatch grows into an income tax dispute. A chartered accountant or advocate handling appeals before the CIT(A) or ITAT can use Claw to track those matters and their hearing dates in one place. For a simple correction, you do not need Claw at all.

10Frequently asked questions

How do I correct my PAN card online?

File the PAN change-request form on the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL website. Choose "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data", tick the fields to change, upload proof, and pay the fee. The corrected e-PAN comes to your email, and a physical card can be posted.

How much does a PAN correction cost?

The fee is a little over one hundred rupees for delivery within India and much higher for an address outside India, and it includes GST. It can change, so read the exact amount on the payment page of the official portal before you pay.

What is the difference between PAN correction and reprint?

A correction changes wrong or outdated details, while a reprint issues the same details again after loss or damage. Both use the same form. Your PAN number stays the same in both cases.

Can I change my name or date of birth on PAN?

Yes. You must give a document that shows the correct name or date of birth, such as Aadhaar, passport, birth certificate, or a marriage certificate for a name change. Make sure the details also match your Aadhaar so linking does not fail.

Is it illegal to have two PAN cards?

Yes, a person can hold only one PAN. Holding more than one can attract a penalty under the income tax law. If you have two, keep one and apply to surrender the other. Confirm the current penalty on the official income tax site.

Will a wrong PAN cause an income tax notice?

It can. A wrong or inoperative PAN can cause TDS to miss your record, so Form 26AS or AIS will not match your return, and that can lead to a notice. Appeals against such orders go to the CIT(A) and then the ITAT.
