How to register a marriage in Karnataka online, which documents you need, how the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act routes differ, and what to do if the marriage later ends up in court.

How-To Guide · Karnataka · Marriage Registration

To register a marriage in Karnataka online, apply on the state registration portal under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Upload proof of marriage, age and address, book the Sub-Registrar appointment, attend with witnesses, and collect the certificate. A registered marriage is also the base document if a maintenance, custody, domestic violence or divorce case follows. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Where to apply: the Karnataka Stamps and Registration (Kaveri) online portal, then a Sub-Registrar appointment.
  • Which Act: Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 to register a marriage already held; Special Marriage Act, 1954 for civil and inter-faith marriages.
  • Core documents: proof of marriage, age and address, photographs and witnesses.
  • Fee: small government fee; confirm the current amount on the official site.
  • If a dispute follows: track family-court and High Court cases by party name with a free Claw account.

01Why registering your marriage in Karnataka matters

Most couples in Karnataka hold a wedding ceremony and think the job is done. Then they need a marriage certificate for a passport, a spouse visa, a bank nominee, an insurance claim or a name change, and find they have nothing on record.

A marriage certificate is the clean, official proof that two people are married. Without it, even simple tasks become slow and uncertain.

Who should register

Every married couple should register, whatever their religion. Registration is done under the law that fits the marriage. A Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh marriage is registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. An inter-faith marriage, or a couple who choose a civil marriage, goes through the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Karnataka also has its own state rules on registering marriages.

Why it matters later

If a marriage ever turns into a dispute, the registration record is where everything starts. Courts ask who married whom, when, and under which Act. That is true for divorce, maintenance, child custody and domestic violence matters. Registering early costs very little and avoids proof problems years later.

02Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act: what is the difference?

The route you take depends on your religions and on how you married. The two Acts work quite differently.

PointHindu Marriage Act, 1955Special Marriage Act, 1954
Who it coversBoth partners are Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or SikhAny two people, including inter-faith couples
CeremonyMarriage is already solemnised by religious rites, then registeredMarriage is solemnised and registered at the Registrar’s office
Notice periodNo notice period for registering a past marriageNotice of intended marriage is required, with a waiting period before solemnisation
WitnessesWitnesses sign the applicationThree witnesses are needed at solemnisation
EffectRegistration is proof of an existing marriageThe registered marriage is the legal marriage itself

In short, under the Hindu Marriage Act you register a marriage that has already happened. Under the Special Marriage Act, the registration is how the marriage is created. Check the notice and waiting period with the Sub-Registrar before you plan dates.

A marriage already registered under the Hindu Marriage Act cannot be registered again under the Special Marriage Act. If you married by religious rites and later want the Special Marriage Act route, ask the Registrar how it applies to your case.

03Documents you need for marriage registration in Karnataka

The exact list can vary by Sub-Registrar office and by Act, but the usual documents are these.

  • Application form, filled and signed by both spouses.
  • Proof of marriage: wedding photographs and, for many offices, the wedding invitation card or a marriage hall or temple certificate.
  • Proof of age for both: birth certificate, school leaving certificate or SSLC marks card. The legal minimum ages are 21 for the groom and 18 for the bride.
  • Proof of address for both: Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or a similar document.
  • Passport size photographs of both spouses.
  • Witnesses: at least two witnesses (three for Special Marriage Act solemnisation), adults, with their ID proof.
  • For a divorced or widowed spouse: a copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of the earlier spouse.
  • For a Special Marriage Act marriage: a declaration of marital status and, where applicable, a proof of residence in the district for the notice period.

Keep originals ready

Upload clear scans online, but carry the originals to the appointment. Names, dates of birth and parents’ names should match across every document. A small spelling difference is the most common reason for delay.

04Step-by-step: how to register a marriage in Karnataka online

Karnataka’s Department of Stamps and Registration runs the online registration services, and marriage registration is available through its Kaveri portal.

  1. Open the official portal. Go to the Karnataka Stamps and Registration (Kaveri) website and find the marriage registration service. Use only the government site, not an agent site that charges extra.
  2. Create an account or log in. Register with a mobile number and verify it with an OTP.
  3. Choose the Act. Select the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
  4. Fill in details. Enter the date and place of marriage, personal details of both spouses, their parents’ names and the witness details.
  5. Upload documents. Add the proof of marriage, age and address, and photographs.
  6. Pay the fee. Pay the online fee and save the receipt.
  7. Book the appointment. Choose a slot at the jurisdictional Sub-Registrar office. Marriages are generally registered at the office covering where the marriage took place or where either spouse lives.
  8. Attend with witnesses. Both spouses and the witnesses go to the office on the day, carry originals, and sign before the Registrar.
  9. Collect the certificate. After verification, the Registrar issues the marriage certificate.

If you married outside Karnataka, register where the marriage took place, or ask the office whether your case can be handled where you now live.

05Fees and how long it takes

The government fee for marriage registration in Karnataka is small. Published figures put the application fee under the Hindu Marriage Act at a few rupees, with a small extra fee for a certified copy. The Special Marriage Act has slightly different small fees for notice, solemnisation and certified copy.

If a late registration is involved, a delay fee or an affidavit may be asked for. Ask the Sub-Registrar before the visit.

Timing: once documents are complete and the appointment is done, the certificate is usually issued quickly. A Special Marriage Act marriage takes longer because of the notice period.

Be careful about agents who ask for large amounts. The official fee is low. If someone quotes you thousands of rupees, you are paying for their service, not for the government.

06How to get and download the marriage certificate in Karnataka

After registration, you can collect the certificate at the Sub-Registrar office. The portal also lets you track your application and, where available, view or download a copy using your application or registration number.

If you need a certified copy

Many uses, such as visas and court filings, ask for a certified copy. Apply for it at the Sub-Registrar office, or online where the portal allows, and pay the small certified copy fee.

If you need it for use abroad

For foreign use you may need extra steps such as attestation. Check with the embassy or the authority that asked for the certificate which steps they want. Your registration number and a good scan of the certificate will help.

If the certificate has a mistake

Wrong spellings or dates should be corrected through the Registrar with supporting documents. Do this early, before the certificate is used on other records.

07Common problems and how to avoid them

  • Name mismatch: keep the spelling of names the same as on Aadhaar and the passport.
  • Witness missing: witnesses must attend in person with ID. Confirm this before the day.
  • Old marriage with no proof: if the marriage took place many years ago, gather photos, invitation, temple or hall records and any affidavit the office asks for.
  • Wrong Act: do not pick an Act just because it looks easier. Pick the one that fits your marriage.
  • Fake websites: use only the government portal. Pay only through the official payment page.
  • Refusal to register: if an office refuses, ask for the reason in writing. The Act and rules provide for appeal to a senior registration officer and, ultimately, the courts.

Registration also does not by itself decide whether a marriage is valid. A marriage that was void or voidable for other reasons can still be challenged in court. The certificate is strong proof, not a shield against every challenge.

08When a registered marriage ends up in a legal dispute

For most couples, registration is the end of the process. For some, it becomes the first exhibit in a court case. The marriage certificate is the starting document in matrimonial matters such as:

These cases run in family courts, and appeals and writs can reach the Karnataka High Court. They often run for years, with many hearings, in more than one forum at the same time. Missing a date or an order is a real risk, for the party and for the advocate.

Why tracking by party name helps

Family matters are known by the names of the husband and wife, not by a simple number you remember. A cross case filed by the other side may be in a different court. Searching and tracking by party name lets you find all of them and see each next date in one place.

Other topics that can arise, such as property disputes, insurance claims or criminal charges, have their own guides. For example, see land dispute case tracking, insurance litigation management software and Section 34 IPC on common intention.
