01How to check Supreme Court case status on the official portal
The official source is the Supreme Court of India website, sci.gov.in. Its Case Status page lets you search without logging in. The quickest route for a newly filed matter is the diary number page at sci.gov.in/case-status-diary-no.
- Get your details ready. Keep the diary number and diary year (for example 1588/2025). If you do not have it, keep the case number, party name, CNR or advocate name.
- Open Case Status. Go to sci.gov.in and click Case Status in the menu.
- Pick a search method. The portal offers Diary Number, Case Number, Party Name, Advocate on Record and other options. Start with Diary Number if you have it.
- Enter the details and the captcha. Type the number and year, solve the captcha and click Search.
- Read the result. You see whether the case is pending or disposed, the bench, the listing history and the next date. Order links appear on the same page.
The portal gives you the live record, one case at a time. It does not send you an alert when the date changes. That gap is what the last section of this page covers.

Use the method that matches what you already have in your hand. Diary number comes first because it works from the day a petition is filed, before the case is registered.

03Diary number: what it is and how to use it
A diary number is given to every petition on the day it is filed at the Supreme Court registry. It is a serial number plus the year, such as 1588/2025. It is the first identifier a case has, so it is the only way to find a matter that is filed but not yet registered.
Diary number versus case number
After scrutiny and registration the matter also gets a case number, such as SLP(C) 1234/2024 or WP(C) 5678/2024. The cause list uses the case number. Keep both. Use the diary number until registration, then switch.
Where to find your diary number
- On the filing receipt or e-filing acknowledgement.
- In the e-filing account on efiling.sci.gov.in, where filed matters show their diary numbers.
- From your Advocate on Record or the filing clerk.
If a diary number search shows no result, check the year first. Most failed searches are a wrong year or a missing digit.
04Supreme Court benches and cities
The Supreme Court sits at a single seat in New Delhi. There are no regional benches, so every status search, whatever the city of the parties, goes through the same portal. The table clears up the usual city questions.

05What each Supreme Court status means
These are the words you will see in the status field and the listing history.

| Disposed | The court has finished with the case. The final order or judgment is available. |
| Listed | The case is on the cause list for a given date and bench. |
| For orders | The matter is listed only for the court to pass an order, often after hearing. It may be a short listing. |
| Reserved | Arguments are over and the judgment will be pronounced later. No date may be given. |
| Adjourned | The hearing did not go ahead and the case moves to a later date. |
| Part heard | Arguments started but did not finish. The same bench continues on the next date. |
"Listed" on the status page is not a promise that the case will be taken up. Check the cause list for that day to confirm.
06Cause list and next hearing date
The next date on the status page is the planned date. The cause list shows what is actually being heard. Check it the evening before, and again on the morning of the hearing for a supplementary list.
- On sci.gov.in open the Cause Lists section.
- Choose the date and the list type (main list or supplementary).
- Open the PDF and search for your case number or party name with Ctrl+F.
Matters can be added, dropped or moved at short notice. A date shown on the status page that does not appear in the cause list has not been taken up that day.
07Orders, judgments and lower court history
