EPF / PF Withdrawal Online: How to Claim, Check Status, and Appeal a Rejected Claim (2026)
A step-by-step guide to claiming your PF online, checking claim status, understanding TDS, and what to do when a claim is rejected or an employer has not deposited PF. Last verified October 2026.
How-To Guide · EPF / PF Withdrawal
You have left a job, you need your provident fund, and the claim either will not go through or comes back rejected. Or your employer has deducted PF from your salary but never deposited it. This guide shows how to withdraw EPF online using your UAN and Aadhaar-linked KYC (Form 19, 10C or 31), the TDS rules, and how to check claim status. It also explains what to do if the claim is wrongly rejected or the employer defaults: raise a grievance with EPFO, then move to the tribunal or court.
- How to withdraw: log in to the EPFO member portal or UMANG with your UAN, check Aadhaar-linked KYC, then file Form 19, 10C or 31 under Online Services.
- Check status: use Track Claim Status on the portal or UMANG, and your Passbook once settled.
- TDS: can apply if you withdraw before five years of service above the threshold. Form 15G or 15H can help if your income is below the taxable limit.
- If rejected: fix KYC errors first. For real disputes, file on EPFiGMS, escalate within EPFO, then appeal to the tribunal and court.
- Dispute tracking: Claw tracks court and tribunal cases by party name.
01Before you start
Most failed PF claims fail because of small mismatches, not because the money is not there. Spend ten minutes on this checklist first.
- Active UAN: your Universal Account Number must be activated, with a working password.
- Aadhaar linked to UAN: the Aadhaar OTP goes to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. If that number is old, the OTP step will fail.
- Verified KYC: your bank account, IFSC and PAN should show as approved on the portal. Your name and date of birth should match across Aadhaar and EPFO records.
- Date of exit: your old employer must have marked your exit date. Without it, a final settlement claim cannot be filed.
- Merged accounts: if you have more than one member ID from past jobs, transfer or merge them under one UAN first.
The official portal for all of this is the EPFO Member e-SEWA portal. The UMANG app gives access to the same services on your phone.
02Which form to use: Form 19, Form 10C or Form 31
The online claim screen groups the forms together. Pick the one that fits your situation.
| Form | What it is for | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Form 19 | Final PF settlement | You have left your job and want your PF balance |
| Form 10C | Withdrawal benefit from the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) | You have left and have less than 10 years of pension service |
| Form 31 | PF advance or partial withdrawal | Needs such as illness, education, marriage, home purchase or repair, while still employed |
For a combined claim, the portal usually lets you file the PF part and the pension part together. The exact options shown depend on your service record and the current EPFO rules.
03Step-by-step: how to withdraw PF online
Follow these steps in order.
- Log in. Open the member portal, enter your UAN, password and captcha. On the UMANG app, choose EPFO and then the employee services option.
- Verify KYC. Under the Manage menu, open KYC and confirm that Aadhaar, PAN and bank details show as verified.
- Open the claim form. Go to Online Services and select Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C and 10D).
- Confirm your details. The portal shows your name, date of birth and bank account. Type the full bank account number to verify it, then proceed.
- Choose the claim. Select the type of claim (final settlement, pension withdrawal, or advance). For an advance, give the purpose and amount.
- Add the address and, if asked, a cheque or document. Some claims need a scanned cancelled cheque or supporting proof.
- Submit with OTP. Tick the certificate of undertaking and enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Note the claim number. Save it. You will need it to track the claim or raise a grievance.
Many Aadhaar-verified claims are now processed without the employer approving them, which cuts the wait. Claims that need the employer or a field check take longer.
04Eligibility and TDS on PF withdrawal
Eligibility in short
- Final settlement is for members who have left employment. EPFO rules set a minimum period of unemployment before the full balance can be taken, so check the current rule on the portal.
- Advances under Form 31 depend on the purpose and on how long you have been a member.
- Pension withdrawal under Form 10C applies when you do not qualify for a monthly pension.
TDS in short
Under the Income-tax rules, PF withdrawn before five years of continuous service can attract tax deducted at source if the amount is above the threshold. The rate is lower if you give your PAN and higher if you do not. Members whose income is below the taxable limit can submit Form 15G (or 15H for senior citizens) to avoid TDS. Transfers between PF accounts on a job change are not taxable. Service with earlier employers counts toward the five years when accounts are transferred.
Not tax advice
TDS is only an advance deduction. The final tax on your withdrawal depends on your total income and years of service. Check with a chartered accountant if the amount is large.
05How to check PF claim status
You can track your claim in three ways.
- Member portal: log in with your UAN and use Track Claim Status under the Online Services menu.
- UMANG app: open the EPFO service, choose Track Claim, and sign in with your UAN.
- SMS or EPFO Passbook: a settled claim shows as a withdrawal entry in your Passbook, and the money reaches your linked bank account.
The common status messages are Under Process, Approved, Settled, Rejected and Returned. If the status has not moved for a long time, do not file a duplicate claim. Raise a grievance instead (see below), quoting the claim number.
06Common reasons a PF claim is rejected
These are the reasons seen most often. Most can be fixed and the claim refiled.
- Name or date of birth mismatch between EPFO records and Aadhaar.
- Bank details not verified, or an account number or IFSC that does not match.
- Exit date missing or entered wrongly by the employer.
- Aadhaar not seeded to the UAN, or an Aadhaar-linked mobile that no longer works.
- Multiple member IDs not yet merged or transferred.
- Employer has not paid or filed contributions, so the account does not show the full balance.
- Pending inquiry or dispute on the establishment, such as a recovery or damages proceeding.
Fix the first five yourself by correcting KYC through the portal or your employer. The last two are not paperwork errors. They are disputes, and they need a different route.
07The grievance and appeal route
If your claim is wrongly rejected, delayed, or your employer has defaulted, work through these levels in order.
- EPFiGMS grievance. File a complaint on the EPFO grievance portal (epfigms.gov.in) with your UAN and claim number. Upload proof. You get a registration number to track it. The field office must respond within a set time.
- Escalate within EPFO. If the first reply is unsatisfactory, escalate to the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner or the Central PF Commissioner through the same grievance system, or approach the nodal officer of the regional office.
- Employer default. If PF was deducted from your wages but not deposited, the Regional PF Commissioner can inquire and recover dues under Section 7A of the EPF Act, 1952, and can levy damages under Section 14B. Your complaint about the default should go to the regional office, with payslips and bank statements as proof.
- Appeal to the tribunal. A person aggrieved by an order of an EPFO authority under Sections 7A, 7B, 7C or 14B can appeal under Section 7I of the Act. Such appeals now go to the Central Government Industrial Tribunal (CGIT), since the EPF Appellate Tribunal was merged into it.
- High Court. If the tribunal route does not resolve it, or a plain legal right is being denied, a writ petition lies in the High Court. Courts have repeatedly dealt with wrongly refused PF claims and employer defaults, so there is a body of case law to rely on.
Keep the paper trail
Save the claim number, screenshots of the rejection reason, grievance registration numbers, and every reply. A tribunal or court will ask for the dates and the reasons given at each level.

08Where Claw fits
Most PF claims never reach a tribunal. If yours does, you are no longer filling a form. You are following a case with a party name, dates and hearings, and the status you need is no longer on the EPFO portal.
Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.
For a PF dispute, Claw helps you track the matter by party name across courts and tribunals, so you can follow the employer or the EPFO office without checking each court site by hand. Claw covers 9,102 forums for case tracking, and its case search runs over 30 crore+ judgments with results in under 5 seconds, which helps when you want to see how courts have treated similar PF rejections or employer defaults. Claw has a free plan for individual advocates. If you are a worker and not an advocate, it still helps to follow your case through a lawyer who uses it. To see how party-name tracking works, read alternatives for checking case status in India. If you want to know how jurisdiction works when a dispute crosses states, see this explainer on jurisdiction in an IP dispute for how courts decide where a case can be filed.
If your PF claim is rejected or your employer has not deposited PF, create a FREE Claw account to track the dispute and any court/tribunal case by party name.

10Frequently asked questions
How do I withdraw my PF online?
Log in to the EPFO member portal or the UMANG app with your UAN. Check that Aadhaar, PAN and bank details are verified. Go to Online Services, choose Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C and 10D), pick the claim type, and submit with the Aadhaar OTP. Save the claim number.
What is the difference between Form 19, Form 10C and Form 31?
Form 19 is for final PF settlement after you leave a job. Form 10C is for withdrawal benefit under the Employees Pension Scheme. Form 31 is for a PF advance or partial withdrawal for needs like illness, education or a home.
How do I check my PF claim status?
Log in to the member portal and use Track Claim Status, or use the Track Claim option on UMANG. A settled claim also shows in your EPFO Passbook. Do not file a second claim while the first is still under process.
Is TDS deducted on PF withdrawal?
It can be, if you withdraw before five years of continuous service and the amount is above the threshold. The rate is lower with a PAN. Form 15G or 15H can help if your income is below the taxable limit. Check the current rule before you claim.
My PF claim was rejected. What should I do?
Read the rejection reason. If it is a KYC, name or bank mismatch, correct it and refile. If it is unjustified or the claim is stuck, file a grievance on EPFiGMS with your claim number. If the dispute is not resolved, the matter can go to the tribunal and then the courts.
What if my employer has deducted PF but not deposited it?
Complain to the Regional PF office with payslips and bank statements. The Commissioner can inquire and recover dues, and levy damages for delay. Orders can be appealed to the tribunal. You can track any resulting case by party name with a free Claw account.
