01How to check DRT Mumbai case status on the official portal

The official source for Debts Recovery Tribunal records is the portal at drt.gov.in. Treat it as the primary source for any live matter. Mumbai has three DRT benches, and all of them are listed on this one portal.

  1. Open the portal. Go to drt.gov.in and click the case details (case status) option on the home page.
  2. Choose your search type. Pick case number, diary number or party name.
  3. Select the Mumbai bench. Choose DRT 1, DRT 2 or DRT 3 Mumbai. Each bench keeps its own listing, so a wrong pick shows no result.
  4. Fill the fields. For a case number search, pick the case type (OA, SA, IA or appeal) and type the number and year. For a party name search, type the bank, borrower or guarantor name and the year.
  5. Enter the captcha and submit. You will see a list of matching cases.
  6. Open the case. The case page shows the status, the next date of hearing and the orders recorded so far.
  7. Check the cause list. On the hearing date, confirm the matter is listed on that bench.

Not sure which Mumbai bench?

If you do not know whether your matter sits in DRT 1, 2 or 3, search by party name on each bench in turn, or check the bench named on your notice. Searching in Claw by party name looks across benches in one go, after you create a free account.

03The three DRT benches in Mumbai and what they cover

Mumbai is one of the few cities with more than one DRT. The territorial split below comes from public notifications of the Department of Financial Services. It has been changed before, so confirm it against the latest notification for a live matter.

BenchBroad territorial areaNote
DRT 1 MumbaiSouth Mumbai area of A Ward (Colaba, Fort and nearby)Also named in the 4 October 2022 notification to hear debt matters of Rs 100 crore and above. That notification was challenged in court, so check its present status.
DRT 2 MumbaiNariman Point and the rest of the city wards from B to G, excluding the area of DRT 1 and the suburbsHandles the older island city.
DRT 3 MumbaiSuburban and extended suburban wards (H to T), plus Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districtsThe widest area by geography.

Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad have their own DRTs, so a matter from those areas will not be on a Mumbai bench. Appeals against Mumbai DRT orders go to the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT) at Mumbai. See the parent guide on DRT and DRAT case status for all benches.

04What the status words mean

The status field on a DRT case page uses short terms. This is what they usually mean.

  • Pending: the matter is still being heard and no final order has been passed.
  • Disposed: the matter is decided, withdrawn or settled and is closed on that bench. An appeal to the DRAT may still follow.
  • Listed: the matter is on the cause list for a given date.
  • For orders: arguments are over or a point is argued, and the bench is to pass an order on the next date.
  • Adjourned: the hearing did not go ahead and a new date was given.

For a plain-English list of other litigation terms, see the glossary of Indian litigation terms.

05Cause list and next hearing in Mumbai

The case page gives the next date. The cause list tells you whether the matter will actually be taken up that day, and in what order. On the portal, open the cause list option for your bench and date. Mumbai benches list many matters a day, so check it the evening before.

If a date shows as passed but no new date appears, the update may be late. Wait a day, then check again, or confirm with the bench registry.

06Why Mumbai DRT matters

Mumbai is the home of many large banks and NBFC head offices, so its DRTs see a heavy flow of recovery work under the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy Act, 1993 and SARFAESI Act, 2002. Lenders file Original Applications (OA) for recovery. Borrowers file Securitisation Applications (SA) against a bank’s action on secured assets.

That volume makes status tracking hard. Party names repeat (a bank is a party in thousands of cases), matters move between benches when territorial limits change, and dates shift often. Missing one date can mean an ex parte order. For lawyers and recovery teams, a manual daily check on three benches does not scale.

For a general view of how Indian courts and tribunals differ in tracking, see case search across Indian courts.

07Where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

DRT Mumbai is part of the 9,102 forums Claw covers, and Claw holds 30 crore+ judgments with search results in under 5 seconds. To check a Mumbai DRT matter, create a free Claw account and search DRT Mumbai by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts. A free account is needed first. The official portal remains the primary source, and Claw sits on top of it to save repeat work. If you manage many matters, see the best legal case management apps in India.
