01How to check DRT Kolkata case status on the official portal
The official source for Debts Recovery Tribunal records is the portal at drt.gov.in. Treat it as the primary source for any live matter. The Kolkata benches are listed on this one portal.
- Open the portal. Go to drt.gov.in and click the case details (case status) option on the home page.
- Choose your search type. Pick case number, diary number or party name.
- Select the Kolkata bench. Choose DRT Kolkata 1, 2 or 3. Each bench keeps its own listing, so a wrong pick shows no result. For a matter in north Bengal, try DRT Siliguri instead.
- Fill the fields. For a case number search, pick the case type (OA, SA, IA or appeal) and type the number and year. For a party name search, type the bank, borrower or guarantor name and the year.
- Enter the captcha and submit. You will see a list of matching cases.
- Open the case. The case page shows the status, the next date of hearing and the orders recorded so far.
- Check the cause list. Before the hearing date, confirm the matter is listed on that bench.
Not sure which Kolkata bench?
In Kolkata city the bench often depends on the police station area of the borrower or the secured asset. If you are unsure, search by party name on each bench in turn, or read the bench named on your notice. Searching in Claw by party name looks across benches in one go, after you create a free account.
02DRT Kolkata search methods compared
Here is every way to look up a Kolkata DRT matter and what you need in hand.
| Method | What you need | Where to enter it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case number | Bench, case type (OA, SA, IA, appeal), number and year | drt.gov.in case details, or Claw after a free sign up | Cleanest result. Usually returns one case. |
| Diary number | Diary number from filing, bench and year | drt.gov.in case details | Useful for a newly filed matter that has no case number yet. |
| Party name | Name of the bank, borrower or guarantor, plus year | drt.gov.in case details, or Claw after a free sign up | Best when you only have a notice. Company names with Ltd, Pvt Ltd or old spellings can hide a case, so try the short core name. |

03The Kolkata benches and the area they cover
Kolkata has three DRT benches: DRT Kolkata 1, 2 and 3. The Ministry of Finance (Department of Financial Services) notified a reallocation of territorial jurisdiction for the DRTs in West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 16 December 2025, replacing the earlier entries from 2017. The new notification is police station wise for Kolkata city.
| Bench | Broad area (before the December 2025 change) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| DRT Kolkata 1 | Part of Kolkata city, by police station (for example Hare Street, Park Street, Shakespeare Sarani, Bowbazar, Hastings) | City bench. Check the 2025 notification for the present list. |
| DRT Kolkata 2 | Districts of West Bengal outside Kolkata city, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands | The widest geography. The 2025 notification revised how this is shared. |
| DRT Kolkata 3 | The other part of Kolkata city, by police station (for example Shyampukur, Jorabagan, Burtolla, Burrabazar, Posta, Jorasanko, Amherst Street) | City bench. Check the 2025 notification for the present list. |
DRT Siliguri is a separate tribunal, so a matter from north Bengal may be there and not in Kolkata. Sikkim and the North East are generally served by DRT Guwahati. Appeals against DRT orders go to the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT), not to another DRT. See the parent guide on DRT and DRAT case status for all benches.
04What the status words mean
The status field on a DRT case page uses short terms. This is what they usually mean.
- Pending: the matter is still being heard and no final order has been passed.
- Disposed: the matter is decided, withdrawn or settled and is closed on that bench. An appeal to the DRAT may still follow.
- Listed: the matter is on the cause list for a given date.
- For orders: arguments are over or a point is argued, and the bench is to pass an order on the next date.
- Adjourned: the hearing did not go ahead and a new date was given.
For a plain-English list of other litigation terms, see the glossary of Indian litigation terms.
05Cause list and next hearing in Kolkata
The case page gives the next date. The cause list tells you whether the matter will really be taken up that day, and in what order. On the portal, open the cause list option for your bench and date. Check it the evening before, because lists can change late.
If a date has passed and no new date shows, the update may be late. Wait a day, check again, or confirm with the bench registry.
06Why Kolkata DRT needs extra care
Kolkata is the main recovery forum for eastern India. Its DRTs hear Original Applications (OA) filed by banks and financial institutions under the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy Act, 1993 (RDDBFI Act), and Securitisation Applications (SA) filed by borrowers against secured creditor action under the SARFAESI Act, 2002.
Three things make status tracking tricky here. First, the split between benches depends on police station and district, and it was reshuffled by the December 2025 notification, so an older note on which bench hears what can be wrong. Second, many cases carry old company names, trade names or Bengali spellings that vary between a bank’s notice and the portal. Third, a missed date can lead to an ex parte order or a delay in a possession or sale step.
For a lawyer or recovery team with matters on more than one Kolkata bench, a manual daily check does not scale. A saved search by party name, with alerts, removes most of that repeat work.
