How to check a Debt Recovery Tribunal case in Chennai on the official portal, which Chennai bench hears which area, and what each status word on the screen means. Last verified October 2026.

Court Status Guide · DRT Chennai

Recovery cases at the Debt Recovery Tribunal move through several hands: the bank, the lawyer, the borrower and the tribunal. In Chennai there are three DRT benches, so the first problem is often finding which bench holds your file. To check a DRT Chennai case, open the official DRT portal, choose the Chennai bench and search by diary number, case number or party name. You can also check it in Claw by party name after creating a free account.

The short answer
  • Official route: drt.gov.in, Case Detail, choose the Chennai bench, search by diary number, case number or party name.
  • Three benches: DRT I, II and III in Chennai each cover different areas, so try all three if a search is empty.
  • Appeals: DRT orders are appealed to the DRAT, not the same bench.
  • In Claw: create a free account and search by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts.

01Why Chennai DRT status is confusing

A DRT status check sounds simple, but in Chennai three things get in the way.

There is more than one bench

Chennai has DRT I, DRT II and DRT III. A case filed against a borrower in one part of the city may sit in a different bench from one filed for a borrower in a nearby district. If you pick the wrong bench on the portal, the search shows nothing, and it looks as if the case does not exist.

Two Acts, two kinds of file

Banks and financial institutions file an Original Application (OA) under the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy Act (RDDBFI). Borrowers and secured creditors also appear in Securitisation Applications (SA) under the SARFAESI Act. Both are heard by the same tribunal but carry different case types, so you must know what you are looking for.

Appeals go to a different place

An order of the DRT is appealed to the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT), not to the same bench. A status check on the DRT portal will not show what happens after that.

Most failed DRT searches in Chennai are not missing cases. They are searches run on the wrong bench or with the wrong case type.

02The Chennai benches and their areas

The three Chennai benches split work by area. Check the bench list before you search.

BenchArea covered (as published by the tribunal)
DRT I, ChennaiNungambakkam-Egmore Taluk in Chennai, and the districts of Villupuram, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, Vellore and Pudukottai
DRT II, ChennaiFort-Tondiarpet, Mambalam-Guindy and Triplicane-Mylapore areas of Chennai
DRT III, ChennaiA group of 14 districts of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu also has DRTs at Madurai and Coimbatore. Appeals from these tribunals go to the DRAT, whose region covers several southern states.

Always confirm your bench on the tribunal’s own pages: DRT I jurisdiction page and DRT II jurisdiction page.

03Check DRT Chennai status on the official portal

The official place to check status is the e-DRT portal at drt.gov.in. It is free and needs no sign-in.

  1. Open drt.gov.in and click the Case Detail tab on the home page.
  2. Pick how you want to search: diary number wise, case number wise, or party name wise.
  3. Select the Chennai bench from the DRT name list (DRT I, II or III).
  4. For a case number search, also choose the case type (for example OA or SA) and enter the number and year.
  5. For a party name search, type the name of the bank or the borrower as filed.
  6. Enter the captcha and submit.
  7. Open the matching row to see the next date, the last order and the history.

Tip for Chennai

If a search shows nothing, try the other two Chennai benches before you assume the case is missing. Also try the party name in a shorter form, since banks are often entered with their full legal name.

04Search methods compared

You can use more than one route. Pick the one that matches what you have in hand.

MethodWhat you needWhereBest when
Diary numberDiary number and year, plus the benchOfficial DRT portalYou hold the filing receipt and the case is new or not yet numbered
Case numberCase type, number and year, plus the benchOfficial DRT portalYou know the OA or SA number from an order or notice
Party nameName of the bank, borrower or other partyOfficial DRT portal, or Claw (free account)You only have a name from a notice or a loan file

The party name method is the most forgiving, but spellings must be close. Names with initials, "Ltd" or "Limited", and bank branch names all change the result.

05What the status words mean

The portal uses short words. Here is what the common ones mean for a DRT case.

StatusMeaning
PendingThe case is still being heard and no final order has been passed.
DisposedThe case has ended, by a final order, withdrawal or settlement. Read the order to know the result.
ListedThe case is on the cause list for a given date and has been put up before the Presiding Officer or Registrar.
For ordersArguments on a point are done and the tribunal will pass an order on that day or a later date.

A case can be listed before the Registrar for procedural steps and before the Presiding Officer for hearing. If you see an order dated after a hearing, download it and check whether it asks for compliance by a fixed date.

06Where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

For a DRT Chennai matter, the useful part is tracking. DRT Chennai is one of the 9,102 forums Claw covers, and its case search is built on 30 crore+ judgments with results under 5 seconds. Status search needs a free Claw account. Create a FREE Claw account and search DRT Chennai by party name or number, with hearing and order alerts.

The official portal remains the source of record. Claw helps when you hold many Chennai files at once and do not want to repeat the search on three benches each week. There are three: DRT I, DRT II and DRT III. Each covers different areas of Chennai and Tamil Nadu, so confirm your bench on the tribunal website before searching.

Can I search a DRT Chennai case by party name?

Yes. Status search in Claw needs a free account. Individual advocates have a free plan, and teams and enterprises are on paid plans.
