Court Status Guide · DRT Bengaluru
Checking a Debts Recovery Tribunal case in Bengaluru sounds simple, but many lawyers and bankers lose time on the wrong bench, the wrong case type, or a diary number that has not turned into a case number yet. To check DRT Bengaluru case status, open the official DRT portal, choose Case Details, select the Bengaluru tribunal, and search by diary number, case number, or party name. You can also search the same matters in Claw by party name after creating a free account. This guide covers both routes.
- Official route: drt.gov.in, Case Details, select DRT Bengaluru, search by diary number, case number or party name.
- Two benches: Bengaluru has DRT-I and DRT-II, so pick the right one.
- Appeals: go to the DRAT at Chennai.
- In Claw: create a free account, then search by party name or number with hearing and order alerts.
01Why Bengaluru DRT status is confusing
Bengaluru has more than one Debts Recovery Tribunal, and that is the first reason searches fail. A matter filed in one bench will not show up if you pick the other from the drop-down.
Two benches, one city
Bengaluru has DRT-I and DRT-II. DRT-I is the older tribunal, set up in 1994. DRT-II was added in February 2017 to share the load. Both sit in the same city, so a search that names only “Bengaluru” is not enough. You need the right bench name.
Diary number is not case number
When a bank or an advocate files an Original Application (OA) or a Securitisation Application (SA), the registry first gives a diary number. The case number comes only after the filing is checked and registered. If you search the wrong type, the portal shows nothing, even though the matter exists.
Banks and borrowers see different names
Most DRT matters are filed by a bank or financial institution against a borrower and guarantors. Party names are often spelt in several ways, with abbreviations like “Ltd”, “Pvt” or old bank names after mergers. A strict name match can miss the file.
In a DRT search, the right bench and the right number type matter more than the party name.
02Which Bengaluru bench hears your matter
DRT Bengaluru hears recovery cases from banks and financial institutions under the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy Act, 1993 (earlier called the RDDBFI Act). It also hears applications under the SARFAESI Act, 2002, such as challenges to a bank’s secured asset action.
Territorially, the tribunals in Bengaluru serve Karnataka. DRT-I is reported to cover the North, East and Anekal talukas of Bengaluru Urban along with several other districts, and DRT-II covers the remaining areas assigned to it by the Government of India.
Because the split is set by a government notification and can be changed, the safest step is to check the bench printed on your filing receipt or on the order. If you are unsure, search both benches on the portal.
Appeals go to Chennai
An order of DRT Bengaluru is appealed to the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT) at Chennai, which hears appeals from the southern DRTs including Bengaluru. Appeals need a pre-deposit as the law requires, so check the current rule before filing.
03Check DRT Bengaluru case status on the official portal
The official source is the DRT portal run for the Ministry of Finance. No account is needed on the official site. These are the steps:
- Open the official DRT website at drt.gov.in.
- Click the Case Details tab on the home page, then choose DRT / DRAT case status.
- Select the search type you want: diary number wise, case number wise, party name, or advocate name.
- From the DRT name list, pick DRT Bengaluru (DRT-I or DRT-II).
- For a case number search, choose the case type (for example OA or SA), then enter the case number and the year.
- For a diary number search, enter the diary number and year.
- Enter the captcha and submit. Open the matching row to see the next hearing date, the stage, and orders.
The portal layout and menu names change from time to time. If a menu has moved, use the search box on the home page or the e-DRT case search page linked in the sources below.

04Search methods compared
Pick the method based on what you already have in hand.
| Method | What you need | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diary number | Bench, diary number, year | The matter was just filed and has no case number yet | Diary number changes into a case number after registration |
| Case number | Bench, case type (OA, SA and others), number, year | You have the registered number from an order or notice | Wrong case type or year gives no result |
| Party name | Bank, borrower or guarantor name | You only know who the parties are | Spelling, short forms and merged bank names can hide the file |
| Advocate name | Advocate details as asked on the portal | You want to see all matters of one counsel | Needs the details exactly as filed |
Party name search is the easiest way in when you hold only a loan notice or a SARFAESI demand notice and no tribunal number at all.
05What the status words mean
The status page uses short words. Here is what the common ones mean in a DRT matter.
- Pending: the case is still open. The tribunal has not given a final decision.
- Disposed: the case is over at this bench, by a final order, a settlement, withdrawal or dismissal. Read the order to know which. Our guide on reading a pending or disposed case status explains more.
- Listed: the matter is on a cause list for a coming date. Check the date, the bench and the item number.
- For orders: arguments are done, or the point is heard, and the tribunal will pass an order. This stage can wait for some time.
- Next date: the date the matter is fixed to come up again. It can move if the bench does not sit.
Remember that “disposed” at DRT does not always end the story. The loser may appeal to the DRAT, and a bank may still run recovery steps after a decree or certificate.
06Appeals and next steps
After a DRT Bengaluru order, the next forum is the DRAT. If you need to file, see our note on e-filing in the Supreme Court for how online filing works at the top court, since DRAT orders can go further in some cases.
If you track many bank recovery matters at once, a manual portal check becomes slow. Our review of DRT and DRAT case tracking software compares the options.
A practical tip: save the diary number, case number, bench name and next date in one note. Most failed searches come from one of these four being wrong.
