How-To · Delhi High Court · Cause List

Every evening, Delhi advocates open a long PDF and scan it line by line to find one case number. If the list is late, or a matter is added in a supplementary list, the cost is a missed or badly prepared hearing. To check the Delhi High Court cause list, open the cause-list section of the official court website, pick the date and list type, then find your court number or case inside the file. Claw can also show the next hearing date for each of your Delhi High Court matters automatically, so you do not have to scan the PDF yourself. This guide covers the steps, the list types, and the filters.

The short answer
  • Where to check: the Cause Lists section of delhihighcourt.nic.in, or eCourts High Court Services.
  • List types: daily, advance, supplementary and weekly lists.
  • Search by: date, bench, court number, party name or advocate.
  • Habit: check the advance list in the evening and the supplementary list in the morning.
  • Skip the scanning: Claw shows the next hearing date per Delhi matter automatically, with alerts.

01Why the cause list is a daily chore

A cause list is the court’s schedule. It says which case is listed before which judge, in which court room, and in what order. For a busy Delhi practice, reading it is not optional.

The files are long

The Delhi High Court sits as a large court with many benches, so a single day can run to many courts and a lot of items. Finding one matter means searching a long PDF, often more than once a day.

Lists change

The advance list is not always the final word. A supplementary list can add matters, and the order of items can matter for when your case is actually called. Advocates who check only once can be caught out.

Timing is tight

The next day’s list is usually uploaded the evening before, so preparation often happens late at night. A missed listing is hard to repair the next morning.

The cause list is the one document every advocate must read every working day, and the one most often read by scanning instead of searching.

02Step by step: check the Delhi High Court cause list online

You can check the list for free on the official portals. Here is the simple path on the court’s own website.

  1. Open the official site. Go to delhihighcourt.nic.in and open the Cause Lists menu.
  2. Choose the list type. Pick the daily (regular) list, the advance list, or a supplementary list.
  3. Select the date. Choose the hearing date you want. Past dates are available in the archive.
  4. Open the right list. Lists are grouped by court number and by Original Side or Appellate Side. Open the one that has your matter.
  5. Search inside the file. Press Ctrl+F and type your case number, party name or your own name as advocate.
  6. Note the item number and court number. The item number tells you roughly when your matter may be called.
  7. Check again in the morning. Look for a supplementary list before you leave for court.

You can also use the eCourts portal. On High Court Services (hcservices.ecourts.gov.in), choose the Delhi High Court, open the cause list option, and select the date and court number.

03Types of cause list at the Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court publishes more than one kind of list. Knowing the difference saves you from reading the wrong file.

List typeWhat it isWhen to use it
Daily listThe list of matters to be heard on a given day, bench by bench. The main list you read for the hearing day.
Advance listA list published ahead of the hearing day so counsel can prepare. To plan your next day or next few days.
Supplementary listExtra matters added for the day, in continuation of the list already published.Check on the hearing morning, in case your matter was added.
Weekly listA list of matters fixed for specific days of the week, such as fresh or regular matters. To see how the week is arranged for your court.

The Delhi High Court has both an Original Side and an Appellate Side, and each has its own lists. Company and other special matters can also appear in their own lists.

04Filters: what you can search the Delhi cause list by

You can look for your matter in several ways. Which one works best depends on what you already know.

Search byWhat you needBest when
DateThe hearing dateYou know the date and want the full list.
BenchThe Division Bench or Single JudgeYou know which bench hears your matter.
Court numberThe court room numberThe same court hears your matters regularly.
Party namePetitioner or respondent nameYou do not have the case number handy.
AdvocateYour name or the counsel’s nameYou want every matter you are listed in.

Party names are often written in different ways in the list, such as with initials or short forms. If a name search finds nothing, try the case number or the advocate name.

05Benches and court numbers at the Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court list is organised by court number, and each court is either a Division Bench or a Single Judge bench. Division Benches of two judges hear appeals, writ petitions of larger importance and reference matters. Single Judge benches hear a wide range of original and writ matters.

Court No. 1 is traditionally the court of the Chief Justice, usually sitting as a Division Bench. On the Original Side, a Joint Registrar also holds a list for matters such as admission and denial of documents and procedural orders. Matters before the Registrar are listed separately from judge benches.

Court numbers and the judges who sit in them change when the roster changes, usually at the start of a term or after new appointments. Always read the roster for the current period instead of relying on last year’s court number.

Subject-specific matters add another layer. For example, trademark and other intellectual property matters in Delhi are heard by the Intellectual Property Division, and advocates in that area track listings closely. See how trademark hearings are tracked in India.

06Common problems when checking the list

The list is not uploaded yet

If the next day’s list is not on the site, check again later in the evening, and check the advance list. Do not assume your matter is not listed.

Your case is not in the file

Search by case number first. If that fails, search the party name in short forms, then search the advocate name. A matter may also be in a supplementary list.

The date was changed

A matter can be adjourned or advanced. Reading the list every day, or using automatic alerts, is the only safe habit. For a workflow that fits a busy practice, see our guide on using the daily cause list as a workflow.

You track many matters

With many Delhi matters, manual search is slow. A tool that reads the list for you is useful. See our guide to Delhi High Court case tracking software for options.
