Case Status Guide · ITAT

How to check ITAT case status online: open the official ITAT judicial case status page (itat.gov.in/judicial/casestatus), choose the bench, then search by appeal number, assessee (party) name or acknowledgement number. The result shows the current stage and next hearing date. A free Claw account can search every bench at once.

Key facts about ITAT case status
  • Official portal: itat.gov.in/judicial/casestatus. Search by appeal number, assessee name, date of filing or acknowledgement number, after choosing the bench.
  • PAN: use the name as on the PAN record for name searches. Direct PAN field availability is to be confirmed on the live portal.
  • Appeal number format: Type/SerialNumber/BenchCode/Year, for example ITA 2905/BANG/2025.
  • Benches: about 63 benches across about 27 stations, headquartered in Mumbai.
  • No CNR numbers: the ITAT uses its own appeal numbering.
  • Claw: a free account lets you search ITAT by party name or case number across every bench, with alerts. Coverage is 9,102 courts, benches and forums.

01How to check ITAT case status online (official portal, step by step)

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal publishes case status on its own website at itat.gov.in/judicial/casestatus. This is the primary source for ITAT appeal status. Everything else, including Claw, sits on top of it. Start here if you only need to check one appeal.

Steps to check ITAT case status

  1. Open the ITAT case status page on itat.gov.in.
  2. Select the bench where the appeal was filed (for example Mumbai or Delhi).
  3. Choose the search type: appeal number, assessee name, date of filing, or acknowledgement number.
  4. For an appeal number, pick the appeal type (ITA, SA, MA or CO), then enter the serial number and the year. For a name search, type the assessee name exactly as it appears on the PAN record.
  5. Enter the captcha and submit.
  6. Open the matching row to see the current stage, the next hearing date and, if passed, the order.

The official portal works one bench at a time. If you do not know the bench, you may need to try more than one. The next sections show how to avoid that.

02ITAT status check methods: by PAN, appeal number, party name and bench

Most people check case status ITAT in one of a few ways: by appeal number, by party name or by bench. This table covers all of them, plus PAN, acknowledgement number and date of filing, in one place.

MethodWhat you needWhere to enter itNotes
By PANPAN of the assesseeName field on the ITAT portal (use the name on the PAN record), or the party search in ClawITAT appeals are indexed by assessee name and appeal number. The PAN helps you get the exact name on record, so use it to avoid spelling mismatches.
By appeal / case numberAppeal type (ITA, SA, MA, CO), serial number, bench and yearAppeal number search on itat.gov.in/judicial/casestatus, after selecting the benchFastest route when you have the memo of appeal. All four parts are needed.
By party nameAssessee name (also try the department as respondent)Assessee name search on the ITAT portal, or party name search in ClawTry the PAN spelling first, then a shorter form. Departmental appeals list the assessee as respondent.
By benchThe bench city where the appeal was filedBench dropdown on the ITAT portalThe portal needs a bench for most searches. Claw searches across every bench at once.
By acknowledgement numberAcknowledgement number from e-filingAcknowledgement search on the ITAT portalUse this for a fresh appeal that has no formal appeal number yet.
By date of filingDate the appeal was filedDate of filing search on the ITAT portalUseful to confirm a recent appeal was registered.

Which method should you use?

  • Have the appeal number? Use the appeal number search. It is the most exact.
  • Only have the client name or PAN? Use the name search, and check the respondent side too.
  • Do not know the bench? Use a tool that searches every bench at once, such as the one below.

03ITAT benches and cities: where to search

The ITAT has about 63 benches across about 27 stations, with its headquarters in Mumbai. The table below answers the common city searches such as ITAT Mumbai case status and ITAT Delhi case status on this one page.

Bench / cityBench code in appeal numberHow to check status

DelhiDELSelect Delhi on the official portal, or search in Claw
KolkataKOLSelect Kolkata, then search by appeal number or assessee name

PunePUNSelect Pune, then search by appeal number or assessee name
Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jaipur, Indore, Nagpur, Cochin and the other benchesShown in the bench dropdownSelect the bench on the official portal, or search in Claw without picking a bench

Jurisdiction generally follows the assessing officer’s location. The Commissioner (Appeals) order you are appealing usually states it, which tells you the right bench.

04How to read an ITAT appeal number

A typical number looks like ITA 2905/BANG/2025. It has four parts: appeal type, serial number, bench code and year of filing. The same serial number repeats across benches and years, so all four are needed.

  • ITA (Income Tax Appeal): the main appeal against an order of the Commissioner (Appeals).
  • SA (Stay Application): asks to stay recovery of the tax demand while the appeal is pending.
  • MA (Miscellaneous Application): asks to rectify or recall an order for an apparent mistake.
  • CO (Cross Objection): filed by the other side once an appeal is admitted.

The ITAT does not use CNR numbers. A CNR search will not work on its portal. One dispute often produces several linked filings, for example an ITA with an SA, and later an MA.

05What the ITAT status words mean

The ITAT appeal status field is short but easy to misread. Here is what each word usually means.

StatusWhat it means
PendingThe appeal is registered and not yet decided. It may or may not have a hearing date.
Listed / fixed for hearingThe appeal is on the cause list for a date. Check the bench and date.
HeardArguments were taken. The order may still be awaited.
Reserved / for ordersThe bench has heard the matter and will pronounce the order later. No new hearing is expected.
DisposedThe appeal is decided. Look for the order copy in the Tribunal Orders section.

Exact wording can differ by bench and over time.

06Cause list and next hearing date

The next hearing date shows in the status result when one is fixed. For a wider view, bench wise cause lists are published on the official site and mirrored by independent resources such as itatonline.org. Cause lists usually come out close to the hearing date, so check them again the day before. For how cause lists work across many forums, see how to manage cause lists across multiple courts in India.

For orders, use the Tribunal Orders section of the official site. It is built to find a known order, not to research a point of law.

07Check it in one step with Claw

Checking bench by bench is slow, and a wrong bench or a spelling mismatch returns nothing. There is a faster way.

Create a free Claw account and search ITAT (Income Tax Appellate Tribunal) by party name or case number across every bench, with hearing and order alerts.

  1. Sign up free at clawlaw.in.
  2. Search by party name or by case number. You do not need to pick the bench first.
  3. Add the matter to track it. You get alerts when the hearing date or status changes.

Free account needed

Status search in Claw needs a free account. Sign up is free for individual advocates. The official ITAT portal stays the primary source, and Claw works as the layer above it.

08Common problems and fixes

Appeal number search returns nothing

The usual cause is a wrong bench or appeal type. A very new appeal may not have a number yet, so search by acknowledgement number.

Name search misses the case

Try the name as on the PAN, then a shorter form. Also check the respondent side, since departmental appeals against a client are easy to miss.

You do not know the bench

Check the Commissioner (Appeals) order for jurisdiction, or search across every bench in one go with a tool that does so.

Tracking matters in several states

Manual checks on each bench waste time. See case search across Indian courts and how to choose matter management software in India. If your dispute is about a company or insolvency, it goes to a different tribunal: see NCLT and NCLAT case tracking software.

09Where Claw fits

It sends WhatsApp and email alerts on changes, and its AI auto-compliance reads an order and sets follow up reminders. Claw also has 30 crore+ judgments searchable in under 5 seconds for High Court and Supreme Court research. For ITAT case law itself, use the official Tribunal Orders search, itatonline.org or a research database. Claw’s Legal GPT can help you work through an ITAT order once you have it.
