Bombay High Court Judgments: How to Find and Download Them Online (2026)
A step-by-step guide to finding and downloading a Bombay High Court judgment or order online, how to tell reported from unreported judgments, and how to cite what you find.
How-To Guide · Bombay High Court
You need a Bombay High Court judgment, maybe for a brief due tomorrow, and you only half remember the parties or the date. The court publishes orders and judgments online for free, but the search forms are strict and a small mismatch gives you an empty page. To find and download a Bombay High Court judgment or order for free, use the official High Court website and search by case number, party name, judge, date or Act. For wider research across courts, Claw lets you search 30 crore+ judgments by party, citation, judge, Act or free text in under 5 seconds, with verified citations. This guide shows the official steps, then explains reported and unreported judgments, citing, and date-range search. Last verified October 2026.
- Free route: the official Bombay High Court order and judgment search, plus the eCourts judgment search.
- You need: bench, case type, number and year for the official form, or a party name, judge or date range elsewhere.
- Reported vs unreported: both are valid. Reported ones have a standard citation, unreported ones are cited by case number, date and bench.
- For research: Claw searches 30 crore+ judgments in under 5 seconds with verified citations.
01Why finding a judgment is harder than it looks
The Bombay High Court covers Maharashtra, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It sits at the principal seat in Mumbai and at benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) and Kolhapur, plus a bench at Panaji for Goa. That is a lot of orders, spread across many benches and sides.
The portal asks for exact details
The official order search works best when you already have the case type, number and year. If you only know the party name or the point of law, you need a different route, and many people give up too early.
An order is not always a judgment
Daily orders record what happened on a hearing date. A judgment is the reasoned final decision. Both can be useful, but you must know which one you want before you start, or you will download the wrong PDF.
Finding it is only half the job
For court use you also need a correct citation and some comfort that the ruling is still good law. A downloaded PDF alone does not give you that.
Finding a Bombay High Court judgment is easy when you have the case number. It gets hard when all you have is a party name or a point of law.
02Where Bombay High Court judgments are published
There are two official places to look, and it helps to know both.
- The Bombay High Court website: it has an order and judgment search for daily orders and judgments, and the direct page is bombayhighcourt.nic.in/ord_qrywebcase.php. It lets you pick the court side or bench and search by case details.
- The eCourts judgment search: the national eCourts services offer a judgment search for High Court judgments, at judgments.ecourts.gov.in. It is useful when you want to search by text, judge or date range.
Both are free. The site itself carries a disclaimer that the data is not meant as legal evidence and that you should cross check with the court record. Treat downloads as working copies, and get a certified copy if you need one for filing.

This page is about judgments and orders. To check where a pending case stands, see our guide to checking Bombay High Court case status.
03Step by step on the official portal
Follow these steps to find a Bombay High Court judgment or order by case number.
- Open the official website. Go to the Bombay High Court site and open the order and judgment search page.
- Choose the court side or bench. Pick the right option, such as Bombay (principal seat), Nagpur, Aurangabad or Goa. A wrong bench is the most common reason for no result.
- Choose how you want to search. The form allows a stamp number or a registration number. Use whichever you have on your case papers.
- Select the case type. Pick from the list, for example a writ petition, a first appeal or an arbitration petition. Case type codes vary by bench, so read the list carefully.
- Enter the case number and year. Use the number exactly as on the cause title.
- Enter the captcha and submit. The result lists orders and judgments with their dates.
- Open and download the PDF. Click the order or judgment you want, then save the file. Check that the date, bench and parties match your matter.
If you do not have a case number, go to the next section.
04Search by party, judge, date and Act
You can usually find a judgment without the case number by using other details. The eCourts judgment search and similar tools allow several routes.
Search by party name
Enter the main party name as short as you safely can. Long names and spelling variations often cause misses. Try one surname or the company name alone.
Search by judge
Pick the judge or bench if you remember who heard the matter. This helps when many cases share similar parties.
Search by date range
A date range is the best filter when you know roughly when the order was passed. Start with a narrow window of a few weeks. Widen it only if nothing comes up.
Search by Act or keyword
For legal research, a free text search on an Act, a section number or a key phrase helps you find rulings on a point of law. Use quotation marks for exact phrases where the tool supports them. Official portals are simple keyword tools, so they may miss judgments that use different words for the same idea.
| You know | Best route | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Case type, number and year | Bombay High Court order search | Pick the right bench first |
| Party name only | eCourts judgment search or Claw | Use a short name, try variants |
| Approximate date | Date range filter | Start with a narrow window |
| Judge | Judge filter | Combine with a date range |
| Point of law or Act | Free text search | Try section numbers and key phrases |
05Reported vs unreported judgments
A reported judgment is one printed in a law report series, such as AIR, SCC or a High Court law journal. An unreported judgment is one the court has delivered but no law report has published.
Both are valid decisions. The difference is how easily you can cite them. Reported judgments come with a standard citation. Unreported ones are cited by case number, date and bench, usually with the website or database where you found them.
- Reported: easier to cite, and often has headnotes written by editors.
- Unreported: often fresher, and may be the only authority on a narrow point. Courts accept them, but be ready to hand up a copy.
The official Bombay High Court site mostly gives you the judgment text itself. It does not tell you whether the ruling has been reported or followed. That check usually needs a research database.
06How to cite what you find
A good citation lets the judge find the same text you are reading. Keep these items together.
- Case title: the parties as in the cause title, for example Party A v. Party B.
- Case number and year: for example Writ Petition No. 1234 of 2023.
- Court and bench: Bombay High Court, with the bench if it matters (Nagpur, Aurangabad, Goa).
- Date of judgment: the date it was pronounced.
- Law report citation: if reported, add the series, year, volume and page.
- Paragraph number: when you rely on one point, give the paragraph.
For an unreported judgment, give the case number, date and bench, and note where you downloaded it. Always read the final order, not just a headnote. Also check that the judgment has not been set aside or overruled in appeal, since a PDF on a court site will not warn you.
07Common problems and fixes
- No result found: check the bench, case type and year. Try the stamp number if the registration number fails, or the other way round.
- Order shown but not the judgment: reasoned judgments are sometimes uploaded later than daily orders. Check again after a few days, or search by date range.
- Party name gives nothing: shorten it, drop titles like Pvt Ltd, and try common spelling variants.
- Portal slow or down: try again at off peak hours, or use the eCourts judgment search as a second route.
- Need a filing copy: apply for a certified copy through the court. A website download is for reference.

High Court judgments in the database go back to 1990. Because the search understands the legal question and tolerates spelling differences in names, it helps when the official form returns nothing.
