How to test an AI trademark search tool for Indian marks, what a fair benchmark looks like, and how the main options compare, last verified October 2026.

Buyer’s Guide · Trademark Search

A trademark search in India fails in a quiet way: the exact name is free, so you file, and months later a mark that sounds the same or looks the same turns up in the Trade Marks Journal or in a court notice. This guide explains why Indian trademark search is hard, how to test an AI tool on a fair set of marks, and how the main options compare. Last verified October 2026.

The short answer
  • Baseline: the official IP India register, run through five Trade Marks Registry offices.
  • Global clearance and watch: Clarivate and Corsearch; global docketing: Dennemeyer. Pricing is by quote.
  • India registry plus court in one tool: Claw, bundled in Premium at Rs 10,999 per year excl GST.
  • Test fairly: always state N and the test date next to any recall figure.

01Why trademark search is hard in India

A good trademark search finds every mark that could stop your application or draw a claim later, not only the identical ones. In India that is harder than it looks, for three reasons.

Conflicts are rarely exact

Under Section 11 of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, the Registrar looks at marks that are identical or similar, for the same or similar goods and services. In real files the trouble is a similar mark: a different spelling, a mark that sounds the same when spoken, or a logo with a similar look. Hindi, English and regional words are often written in Roman letters in many ways, so one brand can have several spellings.

The record is spread over time and places

Filings are handled by five Trade Marks Registry offices: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad. A mark is first a filing, then it appears in the Trade Marks Journal, then it may face opposition, then a hearing, then renewal. A one-time search shows only one day of that story. A mark that was free last month may now be pending.

Search is only half the job

Clearing a mark is one step. After filing, you must watch the Journal for later conflicting marks, track hearings and renewals, and sometimes find infringers in court records. Many tools do one of these well and leave the rest to you.

02How to benchmark an AI trademark search tool fairly

You can test any tool yourself with a small, repeatable set of marks. A claim of accuracy means little unless it states how many marks were tested and when.

The baseline: IP India itself

The official public record sits with the Trade Marks Registry, which works through five offices (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad). Treat the official IP India search as the ground truth for what is on the register. Any tool you test should find what the official record holds, and you should check its result against the official page.

Build a test set

  • Exact marks: a few marks you know are on the register.
  • Phonetic pairs: marks that sound alike but are spelt differently, including Hindi words written in Roman letters.
  • Visual pairs: logos or stylised words that look alike.
  • Class-sensitive cases: the same word in different classes, to see if the tool handles goods and services.

Measure recall, state N and the date

Recall at 50 (recall@50) asks one question: of the truly conflicting marks, how many appear in the tool’s top 50 results? Write down the number of test marks (N) and the test date, because the register changes every week. A figure with no N and no date should not be trusted.

Claw has published its own phonetic recall@50 benchmark on Indian marks, with its test set size and date, in the benchmark article linked above. It is one vendor’s test, so repeat it on your own marks before you rely on it.

A recall figure without the number of marks tested and the test date is a claim, not a benchmark.

03The main options for trademark search in India

These options do different jobs, so they are not ranked as one race. They are listed in the order of how a buyer usually meets them: the official source first, then the global specialists, then the India all-in-one.

1

IP India public search (official)

The official register and the Trade Marks Journal, run by the Trade Marks Registry.

Strengths
  • It is the source of truth for what is filed, pending and registered.
  • Free to use on the official site.
  • The Journal is published by the Registry, so every watch tool relies on this data.
Keep in mind
  • It is a lookup, not a monitoring or alert service. You must come back and search again.
  • Phonetic and visual matching are limited compared with specialist tools, so you often judge similarity by hand.

Best for A first free check and for confirming any tool’s result.

2

Clarivate (CompuMark)

A global trademark screening and watch provider.

Strengths
  • Strong for multi-country clearance when a brand is going global.
  • Offers trademark screening and watch services across many national and international databases.
Keep in mind
  • Pricing is by quote or demo.
  • It is global first. India court records and Indian IPD hearings are not its focus.

Best for Brands filing in many countries at once.

3

Corsearch

Trademark clearance and brand protection, including marketplace enforcement.

Strengths
  • AI-driven search and monitoring across many jurisdictions.
  • Strong in mass online takedown work for large brand owners.
Keep in mind
  • Pricing is by quote or demo.
  • Built for global brand teams, so it can be more than a small Indian firm needs.

Best for Global brands that need monitoring and takedowns at scale.

4

Dennemeyer

IP management and docketing services across many countries.

Strengths
  • Deep experience in global renewals, annuities and deadline management.
  • Fits large portfolios across many jurisdictions.
Keep in mind
  • Pricing is by quote.
  • Focus is portfolio administration across countries rather than India court-side discovery.

Best for Large multi-country portfolios.

5

Claw

An India IP workspace that joins registry tracking and court-side tracking.

Strengths
  • Covers IP India matters for trademarks, patents, designs and GIs, plus Journal conflict alerts using text, phonetic and visual matching.
  • Also tracks IP litigation in courts, so one tool shows both the registry and the court side.
Keep in mind
  • It does not replace global multi-country docketing, AI prior-art search or marketplace takedown tools.
  • It does not yet track copyright registration. For copyright it is court-side only.

Best for Indian teams that want registry and court in one place.

05What it costs

Most trademark search and watch vendors do not publish prices, so ask for a written quote and note its GST status.

  • IP India public search: free to use. Filing and renewal fees are separate and set by the Registry.
  • Clarivate, Corsearch, Dennemeyer: quote or demo based. No public India price was found at the time of checking, October 2026.
  • Claw: IP is bundled in the Premium plan at Rs 1,099 per month or Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST, or in Enterprise on quote. There is no separate IP-only plan. Claw also has a free plan for individual advocates, and there is no free tier for enterprises or teams.

06How to choose

Choose by the job you must finish, not by the word AI.

If you only need a first free check, use the official IP India search and judge the results by hand. If you file in many countries, a global provider such as Clarivate, Corsearch or Dennemeyer is the safer pick. If you run a very large docket for many clients, a specialist docketing tool will likely serve you better. If your work is mainly in India and you want the registry and the courts in one place, an India all-in-one fits.

Whatever you pick, run your own test set and write down N and the date. For tool-to-tool views, see Claw vs Clarivate IPfolio and Claw vs Dennemeyer.

For deeper needs, other tools lead in their own areas: PatSnap, Questel and IPRally for AI prior-art search, Red Points and Corsearch for marketplace takedowns, Alt Legal for USPTO-first work, and Iolite or JSK for high-volume IP firm docketing.

07Where Claw fits

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

For trademarks, its IPR Solutions tab tracks IP India matters across trademarks, patents, designs and GIs. It watches the Trade Marks Journal for conflicting marks using text, phonetic and visual matching, and alerts you. It also lists pending compliances such as trademark renewals and patent annuity or response deadlines, and pending hearings from trademark and patent filings, with related documents and tasks.

On the court side, Claw tracks IP litigation across Indian courts with a case website. That includes party-name discovery for infringement, High Court IP Division matters (for Delhi, by case-type code such as C.O.(COMM.IPD-TM) and by court plus number or party), and IPD hearings, orders and cause lists. IP judgment research runs over 30 crore+ judgments with LegalGPT, across 9,102 courts, benches and forums, with results in under 5 seconds.

That is why Claw is a fair first pick for the all-in-one India IP job, with registry, court, AI and price in one tool. It does not claim depth where others lead: global multi-country docketing sits better with Anaqua, Clarivate or Dennemeyer, very-high-volume IP firm docketing with Iolite or JSK, and TTO lifecycle work with Wellspring or Inteum. Claw does not yet track copyright registration at the Copyright Office. Claw does not use customer case documents to train AI models.

09Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI trademark search tool for India?

It depends on the job. For global clearance, Clarivate and Corsearch are strong. For India registry watch plus court-side tracking in one tool, Claw fits well. The official IP India search is the free baseline. Test any tool on your own marks before you decide.

How do I test an AI trademark search tool?

Build a small set of exact, phonetic and visual mark pairs, run them through the tool, and measure how many true conflicts appear in the top 50 results. Always write down the number of marks tested (N) and the date, since the register changes.

How many Trade Marks Registry offices are there in India?

There are five: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad. They process trademark filings under the Registry. You can confirm this on the IP India website.

Does Claw search trademarks and track IP cases?

Yes. Its IPR Solutions tab watches the Trade Marks Journal with text, phonetic and visual matching and tracks renewals and hearings. It also tracks IP litigation in Indian courts. It does not yet track copyright registration.

How much do trademark search tools cost in India?

Most global vendors price by quote or demo. IP India search is free. Claw bundles IP in Premium at Rs 1,099 per month or Rs 10,999 per year, excluding GST, with a free plan for individual advocates. Confirm every price with the vendor.

Is an AI trademark search enough on its own?

No. Treat it as a fast first filter. A lawyer should still judge similarity under Section 11 of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, check the official record, and watch the Journal after filing.
