How-To Guide · Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court is one of the largest High Courts in India, and it hears matters from all of Uttar Pradesh. Its judgments and orders run into lakhs, so the hard part is not reading one. It is finding the right one, downloading a clean copy, and citing it correctly. This guide shows how to find and download an Allahabad High Court judgment or order for free on the official portals, how reported and unreported judgments differ, and how to search by date or keyword.

The short answer
  • Free route: search the official Allahabad High Court website or the eCourts judgment search by case number, party, judge, date or Act.
  • Faster research: Claw searches 30 crore+ judgments in under 5 seconds with verified citations, and has a free plan for individual advocates.
  • Judgment vs order: a judgment is cited, an order is complied with.
  • Before citing: confirm it is still good law.

01Why finding an Allahabad High Court judgment is hard

To find an Allahabad High Court judgment online, you usually need one clear detail: a case number, a party name, a judge or a date. Without it, the search gets slow. Three things make it hard.

The volume is very large

The court sits at Prayagraj and at its Lucknow Bench, and it decides matters from across Uttar Pradesh. Every day it passes many orders, and each one is a separate document. A broad search on a common word returns far too many results.

Orders and judgments are different things

Many people search for a “judgment” when they actually need a daily order, or the other way round. The two sit in different places on the court website, and mixing them up wastes time.

A free copy is not always a citable copy

A PDF from the court website is the real record, but it may not carry a law report citation. If you are going to rely on it in court, you also need to know whether the judgment was reported and how to cite it.

Looking for case status instead?

This guide is about judgments and orders. To check where a pending case stands, see how to check Allahabad High Court case status.

02Judgment or order: what do you actually need?

A judgment decides a matter, while an order records a direction given on a day in a case. Knowing which one you need tells you where to look.

  • Judgment: the final decision, with reasons. This is what you cite as a precedent.
  • Interim or daily order: a direction on a date, such as notice, stay, bail or adjournment. Useful to prove what the court directed.
  • Certified copy: a copy you apply for through the court registry, needed when a formal copy is required. The online PDF is for reference and research.
A judgment is what you cite. An order is what you comply with. Search for the right one first, and the rest becomes simple.

03Steps to find and download a judgment on the official portal

The Allahabad High Court publishes judgments and orders on its official website, and the eCourts system also offers a judgment search. The screens change from time to time, so the labels below are a guide.

  1. Open the official website. Go to allahabadhighcourt.in and find the judgments or orders search section.
  2. Choose the bench. Select Allahabad (Prayagraj) or Lucknow, depending on where the case was heard.
  3. Pick a search type. You can usually search by case number, party name, judge name, date or Act.
  4. Enter the details. For a case number, give the case type, number and year. For a party name, use a short unique part of the name, not the full name.
  5. Enter the captcha and search. Then open the result list.
  6. Open and download the PDF. Check the case number, bench, judge and date on the first page, then save the file.
  7. Try the eCourts judgment search if it is missing. The eCourts portal at judgments.ecourts.gov.in lets you search judgments by court, date and keyword.

Note that very recent orders may take a short time to appear online, and older judgments may not all be available as searchable text.

When you do not have a case number, a date range and a good keyword are the fastest way in.

Use a date range

Set a from date and a to date around the likely decision date. A narrow range of a few weeks gives a short list. If you are unsure, widen it by month, not by year.

Use the right keyword

  • Use a section or Act name, for example a section number with the Act, rather than a long sentence.
  • Use one or two distinctive words from the party names.
  • Search by judge name when you know the bench, then narrow by date.

If nothing comes up

Spelling of Indian names varies, so try a short part of the name or a different spelling. Also check that you picked the right bench and the right year.

05Reported vs unreported judgments, and how to cite

A reported judgment is one published in a law report, and an unreported judgment is available only as the court’s own copy. Both can be relied on, but they are cited differently.

  • Reported: cite the law report reference (for example the report series, year, volume and page), along with the case title and court. Check the court’s own Indian Law Reports series and private reports.
  • Unreported: cite the case title, case type and number, the court (Allahabad High Court), the bench if relevant, and the date of the judgment. Attach the copy.
  • Neutral citation: some courts now assign neutral citations. If your copy shows one, use it.

Before you cite any judgment, check that it has not been reversed, stayed or overruled by a larger bench or the Supreme Court. That check is where many errors creep in. For more on this, see court-ready citation verification.
